Blender Work in Progress
Posted by Neelakantan K.K. on April 13, 2007
I’ve been doing my first real model in Blender It’s a sand timer. The body of the sand timer is complete. Now there’s just one teeny tiny problem. I don’t know how I’m going to model the sand inside the timer
. I’ve asked for help in BlenderArtists forum and am waiting for some answers. Newayz, here’s the body. Brickbats are welcome. I won’t say no to words of praise either.
Update:: I’ve Changed the colours of the base and the supports and the top. My colour choice is crap so please suggest some good colour combinations.

Update II :: Following Sunny’s suggestions, I’ve changed the colour to a light brown, although now its looks more like chocolate than wood.
Help on colour much appreciated. Please post your suggestions. And if you know how to model sand inside, well, Please tell me.
Update III: Bump mapped a cone for the bottom half sand and a uvsphere for the top half. here’s the result. worked on the wood a bit. Here’s the image. Thanks to Kaustav for his comments and help.

no, there’s no sand inside. That’s the sand timer’s bottom.
Maybe I should change the color.

A lil’ bit of playing with the colours and you should be on your way to getting that perfect sand glass !!

Nice work there! All I Did in blender was to design a Lemon Squeezer (as it was a tutorial in Chip Mag some 2 yrs ago
)

. Its outdated now.
It was Blender 2.34 or summat now Blender is v2.43

The modelling is fair enough. The texturing could’ve been better. Try a different material for the wood. So much of gloss makes it look more artificial. As for sand, u could use a custom made map, with sand like texture and map it over the sand. Bump map it. For making sand, model a shape which looks like a circular hill , just like how sand looks when the sand timer empties..This is about the lower portion, for the top, model a flat surface and place it inside the container above.
Try changing the shader, reducing the luminosity and alternatively use a diffuse map in the wood’s map.

Hmm. Yes I’ve been experimenting with the settings. I think I need to reduce specularity and increase hardness. and reflectivity is too high. as for the sand, it would be easier to bump map a modified cone. and duplicate it and flip it over in the top.
Thanks for the tip.

Okay, the bump mapped cone for the bottom half works all right, but for the top half I’m trying a modified bump-mapped uvsphere. should work.

Muchos better.. The sand looks more believable.. I’d say good job. Try experimenting with UV mapping coordinated to make the wood’s texture more dense…. Will work just fine..
Two thumbs up
