The Life and Times of Neelakantan

The Regular Occurences In My Weird Life

Blender Time Again.

Posted by Neelakantan K.K. on April 19, 2008

Okay, I should be studying for my end-sems. But then I wanted to play around with Blender again. Damn it, that thing’s addictive.
—————————————-
Anyway, I decided to start off simple. No fancy organic modelling or complex Ferraris. Just a plain scene of some apples on a plate. The plate is on a glass-top table, which is on a floor.

The apples were easy — SpinDup (Blender’s Lathe tool) a set of vertices.

Follow same method for plate.

Table was a bit of a difficulty. I decided to have two different cubes for the glass-top and the rims.

Floor– just a textured plane.
—————————————

Then I decided to add lights. Lighting was not coming off right. I went to Blender’s Wiki for help on Lighting rigs. And then… I realised that my workflow was screwed. I was adding lights after materials, basically screwing up all my shaders. :( *Sigh*

I’ll have to rework the scene. Models will stay, I’ll have to create a spare material, assign it to the models and then read up on lighting. Then create a proper rig, and most probably ray-trace it.

Let’s see.

Surreal Crap

Posted by Neelakantan K.K. on July 22, 2007

Okies, The following image may be slightly disturbing but eh, what the heck…..

————————————————————————————————

————————————————————————————————

I like to delude myself that it’s a brain in a cage. It represents our thoughts and minds which are locked in fetters and need to be unbound. We must let our thoughs flow like a river in spate. No boundaries should exist, no control. Anarchy Must Prevail.

Of course, all it is is modified spheres and cubes with weirdo textures.

Blender Project time again. (Updated Yet Again and again)

Posted by Neelakantan K.K. on June 4, 2007

So I’ve fired up Blender again. This time, It’s gonna be A coffee pot pouring coffee into a cup. I haven’t decided whether it’s gonna be an animation or Still. Whatever it is, I’ll understand Blender’s Fluid simulation system, which is what I wanna do. Anyway completed the scene sans the pouring coffee. Here’s the rendered scene

——————————————————————————————————————-

——————————————————————————————————————-

This was rendered in Yafray. I feel this is my best render yet. :-D

P.S.:: If Anyone wants a higher resolution image, just drop me a line.

——————————————————————————————————————-
——————————————————————————————————————-

Update::

Scaled the cup down, and scaled the wood texture up.

——————————————————————————————————————-

——————————————————————————————————————-

Cheerio. :-)

——————————————————————————————————————-
——————————————————————————————————————-

Update:: Scaled the cup up.

——————————————————————————————————————-

——————————————————————————————————————-

Cheerio. :-)

——————————————————————————————————————-
——————————————————————————————————————-

Update::

Okies, I’ve got the hang of Blender’s fluid simulation system. So far, I’ve rendered a 3D-Still.

——————————————————————————————————————-

——————————————————————————————————————-

I wonder if it would look better, if the coffee (or chocolate, I ain’t too particular) were splashing out of the cup? :|

Let me know what you think.

Cheerio

——————————————————————————————————————-
——————————————————————————————————————-

Update:

Okies, Changed the image to show a full cup. Also enabled SubSurface Scattering and a couple of minor edits

——————————————————————————————————————-

——————————————————————————————————————-

So how is it? Blender’s Fluid Simulation System is rather easy. :-D

Cheers

——————————————————————————————————————-
——————————————————————————————————————-

Update::

Changed the colours a bit. Fluid Simulation ain’t all that easy. I’ll have to work a bit more on the coffee. I think viscosity is too high. This is just slight bug fix, which has introduced more bugs. ;-)

——————————————————————————————————————-

——————————————————————————————————————-

Cheerio for now. Any C&C should be aimed at the colours not at the coffee, coz like I said, I’m working on it.

Skull:: Blender Project Completed

Posted by Neelakantan K.K. on May 29, 2007

So about one month after I posted about it, I started my new project in Blender. It’s a skull. The first problem I faced was with the ref images. They didn’t line up properly. They were nicely done, but did not line up. So had to search for them, in the middle of studying for crappy competitives. My present ref images are
————————————————————————————————–

————————————————————————————————–

These are adequate for the modelling.

Now I’ve only started in full force yesterday. Here are some WIP(Work-In-Progress) shots for those who are interested.

————————————————————————————————–

————————————————————————————————–

As you can see, It still lacks a proper jaw and well, he doesn’t have a cranium. Will get there soon.

Adiós para el presente

————————————————————————————————–
————————————————————————————————–

Update::

I’ve finished the modelling of the skull. I plan to uv-map the texture. So I’ll have to create a texture using GIMP. UV-Mapping is supposed to be hard. Let’s see how it goes.

Here are the skull shots.

————————————————————————————————–

————————————————————————————————–

A Final vertice count of 625 and a final face count of 628. Not bad for a newbie. :-D

Au revoir pour le présent.

————————————————————————————————–
————————————————————————————————–

Update

I unwrapped and uv-mapped a texture to it. Here’s the unwrapped mesh and the final render after applying the first texture.

————————————————————————————————–

————————————————————————————————–

I may improve it. Most probably will improve it. Anyway C&C always welcome. Flames are also welcome.

Addio per il presente.

————————————————————————————————–
————————————————————————————————–

Update

Changed the texture yet again. And decreased the flatness of his head.

My new project

Posted by Neelakantan K.K. on April 27, 2007

I’ve started my next project in Blender ( I just love that software :-D ) . Its a skull. I intent intend to finish it sometime…. next month maybe, or the month after that. I expect to learn a lot about Blender through this project.

Here’s the reference image I’m using.

And here’s a link that I found to get me started

Let’s see where this leads to.

My First Animation

Posted by Neelakantan K.K. on April 24, 2007

This is the first animation that I’m posting. I’ve hosted the animation video on youtube. Don’t expect too much. Its just a badly textured bubblegum dude gingerbread man doing weirdo aerobics. Cheers

PS:-Anyone know a place where I can upload the video. I have it as a quicktime movie.

PPS:-Don’t try those aerobics at home.

More experiments with Blender

Posted by Neelakantan K.K. on April 21, 2007

Seems like I just can’t let go of Blender. It offers so many ways to amuse yourself. I haven’t made any project since the sand-timer(which is still being improved). Mostly I’m just experimenting with it. Today I was experimenting with Blender’s new Sculpt Tool. This tool, coupled with multiresolution, can be quite powerful.
Like this 3D model by Giuseppe Canino showing the potentials of the newly-added digital sculpting tool.

But it can also be fun. It’s a lot like playing with clay, to be honest. :-)

Boredom+Blender=Interesting Results

Posted by Neelakantan K.K. on April 19, 2007

Nowadays whenever I get bored, I seem to fire up Blender, which is pretty frequently. (Yes, I’m Studying  ) Newayz, So today was just experimenting with textures and bump maps and displacement vectors and I must say the results were……interesting shall we say? ( some might call it disturbing, ). Here are the results of today’s B+B=IR
——————————————————————————————-
——————————————————————————————-
This one was actually created a couple of days ago. Haven’t decided what it is. Looks like someone unfolding an egg. :|

These ones were experiments on a beveled, subsurfed cube, a plane and an extruded and subsurfed circle respectively.

Blender Work in Progress

Posted by Neelakantan K.K. on April 13, 2007

I’ve been doing my first real model in Blender It’s a sand timer. The body of the sand timer is complete. Now there’s just one teeny tiny problem. I don’t know how I’m going to model the sand inside the timer  . I’ve asked for help in BlenderArtists forum and am waiting for some answers. Newayz, here’s the body. Brickbats are welcome. I won’t say no to words of praise either. ;-)

Sand Timer with yellow base, top and supports

Update:: I’ve Changed the colours of the base and the supports and the top. My colour choice is crap so please suggest some good colour combinations. :-D

Colour changd to green
Update II :: Following Sunny’s suggestions, I’ve changed the colour to a light brown, although now its looks more like chocolate than wood. Help on colour much appreciated. Please post your suggestions. And if you know how to model sand inside, well, Please tell me.

Colour changed to brown

Update III: Bump mapped a cone for the bottom half sand and a uvsphere for the top half. here’s the result. worked on the wood a bit. Here’s the image. Thanks to Kaustav for his comments and help. :-D
