Book Review:: Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

Dad picked it up on College street the day of the BITSAT exam. Started reading it on 25th. Finished it on 25th, while waiting for my results. And here’s the review.

Catch 22 is a book that tears into bureaucracy. It is set in the last stages of WWII. There is no main story as such. It is the experiences and emotions of a group of soldiers. The book’s humor comes from the absurdity in the book. The Story is however also tragic in some parts, and grisly in others. The story is told in repeated iterations, and the reader learns a bit more with each iteration. The portrayal of the characters is very beautiful, if a bit unrealistic. There is no “black and white” distinction, almost all the characters are painted in Grey. The book leaves you thinking about the absurd complexities of bureaucratic officials, and also about corruption and the inability to protest. A very enjoyable, although a bit disturbing, read.

Rating:- 4.5/5
Verdict:- Go and read it NOW.
