Musings on language

I was listening to the song “Pain” by “Three Days Grace”. They’re quite a good band and the song is very good but back to the point.

The song has a certain line
You’re sick of feeling numb.

Now Numb is defined as Lacking sensation

If you’re “lacking sensation” how can you feel numb????? I’ve heard a couple of my friends use this expression also. I wonder:-“Do they not know the proper usage of this term?”

The proper usage should be ” I have become numb” or “I have been numbed ” or ” I was in a state of numbness”

Please use terms properly. Thank you.

normally, the experienced usage is limited to the feeling becoming numbed. But at the same time, though agreeably it can be misused by some ignorant users, “feeling numb” is a very beautifully usable literary device, namely an oxymoron. It is especially useful for poetic purposes and means…

Yes it is a nice oxymoron. But let it stay limited to poetry eh?

ah well. to define the demarcated boundaries and limitations for something like literature, is pretty much against the basic tenet of it being a form of art.
There should be no limitations set by individuals towards the arts; because that is the essential difference between the arts and the sciences.

If we must use the term “limit”, I think, going by your request of propriety in term-usages, we can at the maximum say that we must use it with a knowing intent. Whether in poetry or prose; or even in colloquial language, it is not for us to decide.
